Every so often, something happens in the news that bears an uncanny resemblance to something I've written in this comic. One of the most recent examples of this is the human smuggling deaths that happened near Cornwall, ON last year. Two families, plus the smugglers went missing on the St. Lawrence trying to travel to the States.
Originally when I wrote Sulphur Tongue entering Canada, he was going to go to a border crossing and it ended up with several border guards and civilians getting killed in a bombing. But this comic takes place in 2005 and everyone was still on edge about 9/11. That would've attracted too much attention. Instead, I decided they needed to be a bit more sneaky about entering the country. But where would a good crossing be? Probably a lot of places along the St. Lawrence, but especially by Cornwall. Lots of Islands, it's fairly narrow and it's quite dark at night. (I also spent a lot of time in Cornwall because I had family there, so I was very familiar with the setting.)
So I did a little research on people sneaking across the border and it was settled. Cornwall made sense and I quickly wrote up this new illegal entry scene. Some of the details of that news story may sound very close this, but any similarities are purely coincidental! I wrote this scene at least 6 months before that happened.
We're well into the home stretch of this chapter. Only 9 more pages to go!
